Posing and Directing People

FRI 1 - 2:30 P.M.

The two biggest challenges facing portrait photographers are how to guide the subject into a pleasing and effective poses, and communicating and directing them to achieve real expressions. This class breaks these areas down into essential and usable techniques. The use of hands, head tilts, props, and hats as well as hiding physical defects is demonstrated. We will demonstrate many classic and effective poses for men and women, individual and couples, kids and families.

The photographer/subject relationship is delicate, so the art of listening and asking questions is a major factor in gaining the trust of your client. Through the use of scripting and practice sessions between the participants, we will discover the best ways to relax and relate to your clients. We discuss how to overcome both the photographers’ concerns and the client’s fears or nervousness, the discovery process, building the teamwork and speaking respectfully to the client in order to guide the photographic session.

Portraits Unplugged

FRI 3 - 4:30 P.M.

*People should take this workshop before the field seminar*

Portraits Unplugged is all about natural light, nothing technical or mechanical with reflectors and diffusers as our only tools. Bobbi teaches you how to find and work with natural light to make flattering and dynamic portraits of any subject.  The beauty of available light is its ability to describe your subject from powerful and strong to soft and creamy. We work on capturing the essence of the people by the use of posing, expressions, tonality, composition, color, backgrounds and props. Bobbi shows you how to work with all kinds of light: hard, soft, bounced, window, “garage door”, reflected, diffused, etc.

Flowers with Flash

SAT 3 - 4:30 PM

Bobbi shows you how to make beautiful and heartfelt images that bring out the beauty, color and texture of flowers. Lighting is the key, and the direction, quality and depth of light all combine together to create the description and mood of the image. One flash is all you need, either off or on the camera, with various modifiers to control the quality. You will learn how to position the light, choose the right modifier, set up the background and use reflectors.

How to use your flash effectively in three different ways.

1. Outdoor fill flash

2. Flash as main light in a studio setting

3. Balancing ambient and flash outdoors.

Flowers! Their beauty, grace and color make them many photographers’ favorite subject. The portable flash is a powerful device that helps us control the impact of our images but not everyone knows how to use it well. Bobbi will show you how to use just one flash, both off and on the camera to make your

flower images glorious. She takes you step by step through the creative process of deciding the feeling of the photo and then choosing appropriate light modifiers. Bobbi explains the process and demonstrates some simple techniques that anyone can do in their own home or in the field.
